NY Theatre week of July 3rd - July 18th
As we approach this weekend's grand celebration of our national self-government, MAMA began thinking about independence. Each of us has our own notion of what it means to be independent. But, independence is a word that can only be truly defined when it is linked to another...independence from something or someone. In this way, Independence is in itself rather, "dependent."
Here in America, even our notions of this monumental day of freedom and autonomy have become rather "dependent" on the notions of family cook-outs and fancy fireworks. This week, as we look to the celebrations ahead, MAMA suggests we take the time to make this 4th of July truly independent. How could we harness a little more of the spirit that brought this great country to life? Take a chance and break with the old habits. Take up your Tea Barrel and toss it defiantly into the Hudson. Tell your children stories of the revolutionaries and why they fought.
And most importantly, take some time to talk about the things for which we must still stand for and against together. One week after the 40th Anniversary of the riots that started the Gay Pride Movement, we are reminded this section of our population is still left without more than 1000 rights we are all here to enjoy. Let us not forget the fight to rid our country of "Taxation without equal representation," is still not behind us. Freedom, Liberty, and Independence are the inalienable rights of every citizen here! Take bold stand for something not because it is popular to do so, but because you know it is right. We have come so far, and the future holds nothing but promise! Go to the Theatre!
Love,
MAMA
